Are you having horse training problems?

horse training problems

Many horse training problems are caused by miscommunication - if communication between horse and owner has broken down it can lead to frustration and resentment on both sides

If you and your horse are frustrated, then any training or schooling sessions will end up stressful and non-productive, and can often reinforce the problem behaviour

Solving your horse training problems may require a complete change of behaviour on your part, as solving problems requires a flexible approach and the willingness to do things differently

Sometimes the thought of 'doing things differently' seems a bit daunting, but with the right advice and support you can break out of the cycle of bad behaviour for good

Does your 'problem horse' exhibit any of the following behaviour?

  • Napping / Rearing / Bucking / Bolting
  • Difficult to load
  • Hard to catch or lead
  • Resistance to schooling or competition
  • Aggression to humans or other horses

The first steps we take in working with 'problem horses' is to establish if the horse training problems are caused by miscommunication between the horse and owner, or the problem has a physical root cause (physical causes could be dental problems, back pain, muscle damage or the results of ill-fitting tack)

If the problem appears to be physical, we may recommend a range of equine therapies or remedial treatments to ensure that the horse is fit and comfortable before reassessing the problem behaviour

If the problem appears to be a miscommunication between the horse and owner, we will work with the owner to agree a programme of horse training and personal coaching to establish how the situation developed, and plan a way forward

Tips for dealing with your problem horse

problem horse

It's very easy when handling or schooling a horse that exhibits bad behaviour, to either...

  • Ignore the problem

The problem will not go away by ignoring it and very often manifests itself later on as a bigger problem

  • Imagine that it is worse than it actually is

By thinking that the problem is worse than it is, can cause the rider to over-correct, which again may lead to making the problem worse in the long term

Assessing the cause of the problem

  • Could it be physical discomfort (e.g. teeth, back or feet)?

When was the last time you had the horses' teeth rasped, or tack checked?

  • Is your training programme too demanding or not consistent?

Are their gaps in your/your horses' education? Are the lessons taught out of a logical sequence? Do you regularly 'skip' training/schooling sessions?

Some other considerations

  • Does the problem seem to be established or is it in the early stages?
  • Do you have the time to spend on re-schooling?
  • Are you able to afford professional help if needed?

If it is a serious problem on the point of being dangerous (i.e. rearing or aggression), and you are unable to spend the time or you cannot afford professional help, it would be far better to think about selling the horse and buying a horse without these problems so that you can enjoy your riding.

Some people love to re-school and correct problems - others just want to enjoy their horse, doing the activity they want to do, without any stress!

Remember, there is no right or wrong way to deal with horse training problems - whichever is the way for you is the right way...
